This Big List provides a more or less comprehensive listing of the many formats and data sources Manifold can use. Given the rapid evolution of Manifold, it could be that a new data source or format has been added that is not yet covered in this list. For the very latest, download the latest Cutting Edge edition of Manifold Viewer and see all the data sources and formats listed in File - Import and Create Data Source dialogs.
See also the Data Sources web page for lists of the latest supported formats and data sources, as well as visual examples for many formats and data sources.
Data sources for database servers built into every Manifold installation. No extra software or installations required.
Manifold Server is a high performance, parallel, read-only, spatial database server. It allows many Manifold users to share data that is published through Server. |
|
Direct connection. Connecting to a 64-bit version of Db2 requires installing the latest fix pack dated December 7, 2017. In the past, Manifold connected to Db2 using IBM's native CLI connection interface. CLI was similar to ODBC and over time the differences between the offered functionality were becoming ever smaller until they almost completely disappeared. Manifold now uses ODBC since CLI has become so similar to ODBC there is no longer any need to support a specialized interface that requires separate configuration but which offers no gain. |

Manifold connects to web servers with built-in capability for proprietary servers such as Bing as well as built-in capability for all standard web server protocols as listed below.
Web servers using REST (representational state transfer) architecture that provide raster or vector data via ESRI ArcGIS protocols. |
|
Web servers providing data in CSV (comma separated values) format, using typical variations on the format. Link to data in CSV (comma separated values) format files provided by web URLs. The CSV web dataport allows refreshing tables to re-read the latest data from the web. |
|
Generic image servers. |
|
Google Sheets spreadsheets served by Google. The dataport is named generically since other document servers, such as Microsoft's Office 365 or other options, may be added in the future. |
|
ECWP Servers |
Link to streamed imagery layered over standard HTTP from ERDAS Compressed Wavelet Protocol (ECWP) servers. |
Geocoding servers using the open geocoding server module interface. See below for a list of built-in geocoding servers. |
|
Web servers providing spatial data using GeoJSON, a "geographic" format using JavaScript Object Notation (JSON). Manifold automatically reads TopoJSON when a GeoJSON Server provides TopoJSON. Geometry collections are expanded automatically. Link to data in GeoJSON format files provided by web URLs. The GeoJSON web dataport allows refreshing tables to re-read the latest data from the web. |
|
Image servers, often written in concatenated form as imageservers, are a subset of web servers that serve imagery in a form supported by dedicated modules specific to each such image server. Many image server modules are already built into Manifold, providing a choice of popular image servers providing street maps and satellite views, like Bing, Google, Here, MapBox, MapQuest, NearMap, OpenStreetMap, WikiMapia, Yandex, and custom servers. Pre-built image servers provide options for both free access as well as paid access requiring API or other credentials. |
|
Web servers providing data in generic JSON text files, written in JavaScript Object Notation (JSON), often used to convey metadata or table data. Link to data in JSON format files provided by web URLs. The JSON web dataport allows refreshing tables to re-read the latest data from the web. |
|
Web servers providing data in KML or KMZ format. Connect using the New Data Source dialog to KML files provided by web URLs. |

Image servers provide pre-built connections to popular services that provide layers using raster tiles. The following image servers are built into Manifold. Servers in green color are in the Favorites list by default.
Some image servers may require licensing or a key for access. If nothing happens when using an image server, choose View - Panes - Log Window to take a look at what the log says. If there are error messages indicating access is Unauthorized, that means you need an API key or login credentials to use the image server. Contact the image server's vendor to obtain an API key or login credentials.

Note that older PDS file sets often do not include an XML file. In many cases, the formats used for images and tables in such older "PDS" file sets can be imported into Manifold using direct import of files. For example, .img files containing images are often in ENVI .img format and can be directly imported. using Manifold's IMG dataport. |

TIF and variations such as GeoTIFF and cloud optimized GeoTIFF. Adobe Tagged Image File Format (TIFF or TIF) is so universally used few people know it is a Adobe format. The GeoTIFF form of TIF includes tags providing projection information. Manifold reads virtually all known variations of TIF/TIFF and will extract projection information from GeoTIFF or older TIF files accompanied by TFW "world" files. Manifold reads GeoTIFF info and always writes TIF files with internal tags providing projection information that make them GeoTIFFs. The GeoTIFF form of TIF includes tags providing projection information. Manifold also always stores intermediate levels within the TIF from smallest to largest, so every TIF file Manifold writes is also a cloud optimized GeoTIFF as well. Manifold also reads cloud optimized GeoTIFF, taking advantage of stored intermediate levels for faster display when linking cloud optimized GeoTIFFs. |

Manifold includes all of the above many formats and data sources within Manifold as fully parallelized, thread safe, native Manifold capabilities. In addition, Manifold can connect to yet more formats using the GDAL open source library if the GDAL library is installed on our machine. The names in the list below are GDAL names for the formats with descriptions taken verbatim from GDAL documentation.
Important: we must have a functioning GDAL installation on our computer to use the GDAL dataport. GDAL installations must be downloaded from third party sites and must be correctly installed. Many GDAL functions require installation of other third party libraries in addition to GDAL.

In addition to all GDAL raster formats, the Manifold GDAL dataport also can connect to all OGR vector formats using the GDAL / OGR library. OGR is a popular open source library that can connect to many vector formats, including some niche formats in addition to native Manifold support. OGR is part of GDAL installations. The same GDAL dataport used to connect to GDAL raster libraries is also used to connect to the OGR vector part of GDAL. The names in the list below are GDAL names for the formats with descriptions taken verbatim from GDAL documentation.
Important: we must have a functioning GDAL installation on our computer to use the GDAL dataport to connect to an OGR format. GDAL installations must be downloaded from third party sites and must be correctly installed. Many GDAL functions require installation of other third party libraries in addition to GDAL.
